Mr. Liaquat Merchant – Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan is a Barrister-at-Law and the Chairman & Managing Partner of LMA.
Mr. Liaquat Merchant belongs to the family of Mr. Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. He established his legal practice in Pakistan after qualifying and practicing as an Advocate of the High Court Bombay from 1964 to 1968. His experience in the practice of law in Pakistan since 1968 covers legal work in India, United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.
Mr. Merchant also served as Deputy Attorney General of Pakistan for 2 years, during 1985 and 1986, and appeared in important constitutional cases for the Government of Pakistan. He resigned to resume private practice of law.
Mr. Merchant continues to be involved in major high profile litigation and is assisted by a team of litigators at LMA as well as complex corporate matters in conjunction with the firm’s corporate department.
His specialised field of work has always been in banking and insurance litigation. Liaquat Merchant presently deals with strategic litigation as well as cross-border litigation matters in addition to advisory work relating to banking, insurance and other corporate financial structures.
In addition to legal practice, Mr. Merchant is the Managing Trustee of the Jinnah Foundation, President of the Jinnah Society and Chairman–Executive Trustee of the Quaid-e-Azam Aligarh Education Trust and is involved in several other trusts and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) rendering services in the field of health and education for which he has received the Sitara-e-Imtiaz. He is also the author of several books and publications.
Mr. Merchant has experience in legislative drafting by reasons of his work and experience as Deputy Attorney General of Pakistan. He is the Sponsor–Founder Director of Bank AL Habib Limited and a former member of “Banking Laws Review Commission” constituted by the Government of Pakistan.
